Thanks for dropping by
Our aim is to keep alive the resistance to the self-inflicted insanity of Brexit. We organise in Canterbury and the surrounding district
The 2016 referendum is far enough in the past for all but the most die-hard leavers to see that Brexit was an unmitigated disaster for the UK.
Even so, many politicians and journalists are telling you that to rejoin the EU is either not possible or not realistic for at least a generation. We do not agree
Here’s why
In 2016 many promises were made by irresponsible and dishonest politicians about the benefits of leaving the EU. Those who identified the predictable disadvantages of leaving were dismissed as promoting “project fear”
In the end, the chaotic governments of Theresa May and of Boris Johnson not only ensured that the UK left the EU without a coherent plan. We also left the European Economic Area (EEA) which was not something included in the referendum. Therefore rejoining the EEA would not conflict with the 2016 referendum result;
Since 2016, “project fear” has become a reality. The UK has suffered economically and diplomatically. Our economy is weaker. Businesses face more red tape. Now that we have left the EU, UK citizens can no longer live and work in the EU. At some point they will also need a “pre-travel authorisation” (ETIAS) in order to visit EU countries for their holidays;
Sterling declined by more than 15% compared to the Euro (and the US Dollar) after the referendum result, and has still not recovered in 2025;
Despite the constant moans about immigration, few UK politicians want to concede the fact that small boat crossings are a direct result of Brexit;
The fight is on
Now the fight is on to persuade voters and politicians that the UK must rejoin the European family. Public opinion is behind us. There are no convincing arguments to delay this necessary step.
Rejoining is necessary not only to rebuild our economy and our international standing but is now a matter of national defence – the war in Ukraine and pro-kremlin stance of the US administration means that the UK must forge closer ties with Europe and give up the poor man’s alternative (and probable illusion) of a US trade deal.
Only the ideologically deranged and anti-EU pro-Kremlin stooges continue to argue that leaving the EU was a good decision for the UK.
Calling for the UK to rejoin the EU is the patriotic thing to do.
What do we do?
Rejoin Canterbury hopes to continue the good work of its former anti-brexit manifestation as “Canterbury for Europe”. Our primary objectives are to:
Provide means for like-minded pro-Europeans in Canterbury and the surrounding areas to meet each other, make new friends and further the rejoin project;
Share information on this website and pro-democracy social media (ie not twitter or facebook !) about related developments and events;
Organise events to help inform the public in Canterbury about the benefits of rejoin the EU.
How can you help?
Add your email address to our mailing list [see data protection statement]
Come along when we have a social or fundraising event (see events link)
Tell your friends that there is an active rejoin group in Canterbury! (spread the word)
Contribute to this website with links and articles (offer to manage the website if you’re web literate!) by sending them to [administrator link]
Make suggestions about how you think we can have more impact (all suggestions welcome)
Who are we?
At the moment we are a small group of locals who initially got together in 2016 in the wake of the referendum to decide what we could do to fight brexit. We had a lot of fun and made a lot of new friends. We organised street stalls in Canterbury high street, held quiz nights to raise funds to print pamphlets and took part together in the various anti-brexit marches in London.
Sadly, the brexit battle was lost but the good news is that the battle to rejoin is now underway, so we decided to rekindle our group and reach out for new members. All you have to do is add your name to our mailing list and we’ll let you know when our next event is taking place.
Bienvenue, willkommen, benvenuta, witamy, bienvenida (and so on) …to Rejoin Canterbury!
N.B. we are not associated with the Rejoin party – not because we disagree with their objectives but because we try to remain apolitical so as to embrace supporters from all political parties.
